Recent Events

Friday 9th May 2008

Devon Magic Circle Stage Show at Collaton Community Hall.

After a break of 28 years the DMC staged the Bailey Cup competition.  It was a super evening and enjoyed by over 60 people.  The evening would not have happened but for the President Ozzy and Alan “Cosmo”.  Cosmo secured the caterer and also supported Dan Hunt in transporting and serving the food.  The quality was excellent and there was plenty for those wishing to – to have seconds.

Dan is based at Newton Abbot racecourse and was supported by Chris Brown who loaned much of the crockery and cutlery etc.  Letters of thanks were sent to both on behalf of the DMC.

The Bailey Cup turned up on ebay in the autumn of last year. The last name on the cup is Bob Downing 1980 but it is clear that there must have been a contest in 1981 when the cup was won by Ken Savage. Ken was a full-time professional magician and busy on the cabaret circuit.  Sadly he had a heart attack when travelling to America on holiday. Although most of his props etc were sold it was not until Val Savage died last year that a final set of items came under the hammer in a Plymouth Auction House. The cup then appeared on ebay and was purchased back by the DMC.

Hence in our 60th Year the Trophy was again up for grabs.

After the meal, Irish Bingo and 2 quizzes we started the DMC Stage Competition with its 7 competitors.

First was Roger Dolan, who did the Slydini Newspaper Tear followed by the Fred Kaps Sidewalk Shuffle, where the 3 blanks and 1 ace end up changing to 4 aces and a blank.  There then followed a Paul Daniels routine of the Chop Cup and finished with a Trevor Lewis Prwdiction of the number of animals in a  large box.  These end up to be penguins – but of the edible kind. The ones the polar bears can’t eat. [because they cannot get the silver paper off!].

Ami

Amy had a very colourful act and performed various silk appearances followed by a mutilated parasol.

A really funny routine with a man from the audience having chosen a card but then via a sword thru’ neck finally had a “briefs between” and in the briefs were the chosen card.

Amy closed with an excellent self-levitation.

Owen Lean

Owen opened with excellent music accompanied by a clever manipulation of diamante balls.

This was followed by a very interactive and scary spike covered with polystyrene cups.  Each was crushed against his head and fortunately he lived to tell the tale. This short account fails to convey the streetwise and funny accompanying patter. From the audience vote later he was a worthy winner of the Bailey Cup for 2008.

Barry Crompton

Barry opened with a really good Splash Bottle Production. The Mind reading follow up did not work out as probably unfortunately a few of the volunteers’ minds actually went blank.

Barry then had everyone really laughing through his £20 note routine where it fails to appear in the chosen bananas but amazingly does end up in a chosen sausage..

Barry closed with the Six Card Repeat and the act was really well received.

Uncle Bobby

Bobby opened with a musically routined colour changing cane followed by cane to silks.

Taking a dog for a walk rope was followed with other fun.  Bobby then concluded with a very good Ring and Rope routine.

Malcolm Norton

Unfortunately I was setting up my act when Malcolm was performing.  Included in his professional act were the smooth pom-pom sticks and his favourite card in mouth. The act also included a number of other effects before concluding with his very accomplished classic Linking Rings to music.

The final act was Brian Hodge who used a Bond Theme to audition 3 female assistants for the new film “Quantum of Solace”  - the first assistant supported a Vanishing Cane in Newspaper followed by a 21st Century Dove Silks leading to a live dove production. This bird then vanished and reappeared in a Jack Hughes’ Dove in Balloon.  The second assistant and her husband contributed to a Ring in Boxes routine. The final assistant (Dianne) worked with the Anderson full Newspaper Torn and Restored and the concluding Dove to Rabbit.

Ozzy was compere for the evening and although the evening only just finished before midnight he did keep it flowing.

Don’t forget, you can telephone Brian at home on ( 01626-862445 .

Steve Evans (The Magic Bloke) – Lecture on 21st May.

1. Steve opened with a Production of elephant (toy)  – followed by champagne – then large coin. This was to highlight the importance of misdirection.

Everything has a reason in magic and it is the detail which is important in presentation..

Steve offered a at £10 and this included a whole bundle of effects and Risk Assessment and copyright free graphics..

Steve also explained that we have to be flexible in the mind to fit our magic to the customer – especially in trade shows.

Steve asked for a theme to include during the evening - Themed Magic Show – for Pirate Lego – Long John One-Lego – used in every trick.

2. Reader’s Digest Trick

This effect used a Member of the audience – although as Steve implied not everyone can do this!! Steve picked Rob!!  Rob is going to win a prize. Home made set of cards which had been laminated.

Reader’s Digest design on the back of cards – strange mixture on front - Walsall, Christmas day, Jordan, elephant, loads of money, balloon model (was forced).

Can be a force used for anything. The laminated cards are waxed doubles.

Forcing method. Sean Carpenter.

3. Rugrats – Kidz Cards Across

It is possible to theme this with any cards. Pirates – Rugrats – cards across – the CD has a video of the counting method.

4. 100 Animal Jokes. – the CD also has 100 animal jokes – depends on who you work with as to whether many would be really usab;e!

5. Tossa - Card trick -  person takes 10 cards -  based on Hoy’s Tossed Out Deck – The Gypsy switch using a handkerchief is deployed.  Then a large wipe clean card with 4 suits on it is shown and each of the 10 cards revealed and people sit down. . To remember the 10 cards use an easy nemonic – eg. use your phone number.

  1. Carrier bag – any bag -  empty but then fills with balloons. –details for construction are on the CD.

  1. The final item in the first half was with a Pack of Cards – apparent multi-person card control. – Thick card used!!

Thanks to Diane and Marjorie for organising the tea and coffee during the break!! Especially as the meeting was in the school and all had to be transported across.

Draw winners – Cosmo (again) – Brian – Dave -

  1. Steve started the second half with a version of Confabulation. Involved asking for a 4 digit number

Photos are available on the disc.

Could be the prize for the Long John No-Lego.

Steve sand the praises of 3M Spray mount – cheap via ebay.

  1. INNOCENT – was an effect using 4 members of audience.  Mixed up 4 large envelopes.  These were held under their arm.

Each person is given a piece of paper on which to write a confession of a crime..Two assistants eliminated but then only one can tear up their confession (Comedy No Tear paper).  – INNOCENT

To match the pirate theme it could be which person will walk the plank ?

  1. Steve then suggested a routine for adapting using the Phil deck.

  1. Steve’s Trip of a Lifetime – Post Card trick - All are Los Vegas (on the back). Postcards

  1. Steve used the World Cup Cricket playing cards. – New Zealand.  (only image with the name of the country.

  1. Who’s in the Zoo?

Last effect – was an effect with animals.     Using New Learning Cards and a double envelope – in one side was a card index with all 6 cards easily available. Therefore no force involved.

Ozzy thanked Steve for the evening’s lecture and we need to thank Roy and Barbara for showing Steve and his wife top rate hospitality!!
